Newsletter for November
Christmas Illuminations from 23 November
The preparations for the end-of-year festivities that take place all over the island begin in November. This event officially starts off on 23 November with
the switching on of the Christmas Illuminations. The city of Funchal is transformed into a very beautiful life-size nativity scene, and the streets are
decorated with all different sizes of multicoloured lights depicting designs that clearly symbolize Christmastime on the Island.
At the beginning of December, this scenario is further enriched, because these decorations are joined by Christmas exhibitions, many of which display
floral arrangements, featuring such flowers as Manhãs de Páscoa, Sapatinhos and many others that help bring beauty and joy to the streets of Funchal.
The streets fill up with people, who are attracted by the magic and by the sound of music that contaminates everybody. Some people use this as an opportunity to do their Christmas shopping, whereas others simply walk about absorbing the frenzied atmosphere and the “party” spirit that can be felt all over the city.
